BATTER UP: Senior Riley Bajorek initiates a friendly team handshak

In the high-stakes environment of competitive sports, the pressure to perform is a constant in a student-athlete’s life. In the precious moments during a game, the weight of expectation can be overwhelming. In these pivotal moments, the role of a senior sports captain becomes crucial.

Captains, with their wealth of experience, serve as guidance for their teammates. They understand the pressures of competition intimately, having navigated similar challenges themselves. A senior sports captain isn’t just a title; a captain is the heart and soul of the team, fostering a sense of camaraderie between players.

According to the Sports Psychologist Journal, sports team captains play an important role in fostering positive life-skills development in young athletes while promoting high-level performance. For underclassmen athletes, sports captains can help ease the transition from middle school to high school, encouraging teammates to rely on each other for encouragement and support.

“Being a leader is super important so girls have someone to look up to,” varsity softball captain senior Riley Bajorek said. “But also, a leader can push them to be better, to work better as a team.”

Captains are vital in continuing long-lasting traditions like senior letters and team dinners. The thrill of receiving a secret sister bag or joining in a pre-game ritual testifies to the community-oriented nature of sports, where traditions enhance collective performance through stronger bonds.

“At our banquet every year, the seniors give gifts to the juniors, who are the incoming seniors,” varsity girls soccer captain senior Rylie Do said. “There’s usually something we pass down that just keeps going. Mine is this little toy camel.”

As a new season begins, spring athletes look to team captains and their foundational role in motivating teams to keep up their hard work for the long season ahead.

“As a team, we have each others’ backs, and that’s what’s most important, ” Bajorek said.
