Career Technical Education Month in February features programs that equip students with real-world skills and experiences for future success in college, careers and beyond.
The CTE program offers IUSD middle and high school students hands-on learning in career preparatory classes during the traditional school day. Through various college and career readiness courses, students develop expertise and experience while building skills such as teamwork, leadership and problem-solving.
“We’re trying to be very intentional with what we offer and allow students to be able to progress through a pathway,” assistant principal Kortney Tambara said. “We have a pathway for students to start at the beginning level in advance, like a lot of the courses that we offer, we want students to be able to continue to build their skills.”
By pairing skill development with opportunities to earn transferable credit, CTE pathways are designed to give students both experience and a head start on their next steps. These classes include NTV, Culinary Arts, Digital Media Arts, Visual Imagery and Horticulture.
“Horticulture, for example, we actually have articulation agreements with some of the schools,” Tambara said. ”So students who take Horticulture with us can take those credits and earn community college credits.”
