A swirled palette of gold, rose and blue fills the sky as birds play with the clouds. It’s not the Irvine sky at sunset—it’s your screen when you play Where Winds Meet. Brimming with Chinese culture with its strong Wuxia elements, Where Winds Meet achieves visual ecstasy and an intricate storyline that enhances its gameplay.
Initially revealed at Gamescom 2022, Where Winds Meet, an action-adventure role-playing game, was first launched in China on Dec. 27, 2024, with the global PC and PS5 release on Nov. 14, 2025. The game gained over 2 million players within the first 24 hours of its global release.
The story begins with an introduction to the protagonist’s life, one that is a mystery the players must solve as they progress through the game. As of February 2026, the only locations available in the international version are Qinghe County and Kaifeng City. The in-game renditions of each location differ significantly; in-game Qinghe is more fictitious, while Kaifeng is a faithful representation of the historical city’s remnants.
Set during the tumultuous Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, the game requires players to navigate daily obstacles and search for the truth about the protagonist’s past (and avoid getting swindled by the Nine Mortal Ways, a sect full of tricksters).
Near the beginning of the story, the player can choose from multiple weapons that are a part of a certain class, but there are chances to master more later.
The player can explore an abundance of content, each detail adding to the plot line, allowing the player to piece them together. Daily, monthly and story-related tasks (that sometimes contain mini-games) keep the player entertained.
The combat is skill-based, so be prepared to get beaten by geese for the first few hours of playing. (The geese are so strong that they can be used as a measurement for your martial arts capabilities.)
The shaders and the sound effects enhance the realistic appearance of the scenery. Since you can travel anywhere on the in-game map, there’s a great diversity of landscapes with mountains, lakes, caves and extensive forests (some of them bamboo). Whenever the protagonist encounters enemies, the intimidating, theatrical sound effect is certain to give the avid C-drama watcher traumatic flashbacks to fight scenes.
The game’s interface is maze-like, so its seemingly infinite menus might feel intimidating at first glance. Rest assured, navigation becomes more natural as you progress through the story.
Unfortunately, the atmosphere set by the Where Winds Meet English dub does not live up to its other high-quality aspects. The English translations and delivery are often inaccurate, throwing the ambience of the game off; the original Chinese version includes tone fluctuations that better convey the mood of each scene.
Furthermore, since the game is still new, occasional glitches occur. For example, your character might get frozen during a high-risk trial or stuck in a tight spot during a section of the story. But the developers have been debugging with each update, so not much detracts from the otherwise thrilling game experience.
Where Winds Meet is a free game with stunning graphics, tasteful music and a rich plot line that is definitely worth the storage consumed.
