My ultimate sport that I like to watch is baseball, specifically the LA Dodgers. It was actually the first professional sports team game that my parents took me to. I think I was five years old, so we’ve always been a Dodgers family. Whenever the Astros play against the Dodgers in their home stadium, I always try to go because there’s a lot of heckling, because they cheated against us, and so it’s always fun to see the inflatable trash cans that they throw onto the field. There’s also nights where they do Mexican heritage night, and I’ve gone with my parents, so that’s kind of nice being in that kind of atmosphere with family.

I’m a Lakers fan. All my [sports] teams are LA teams, so growing up watching the Lakers is a pretty strong memory. Growing up in the 80s, it was the Lakers vs. the Celtics, it was East vs. West, it was Showtime vs. Boston. It was just a great rivalry watching Showtime Lakers with Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James Worthy. They’ve won 17 championships. It’s nice to be a fan of teams that are successful. You know that you can look back and have those memories of teams being really good and winning championships.

During COVID, I watched a documentary of my husband’s favorite team, Arsenal, and I got really invested. They’re based in North London and have a reputation for having an exceptional history of Black athletes. They care a lot about representation and were among some of the first clubs to bring over a lot of French and African players. In the summer of 2024, they did a tour in America, so we actually got to go to the SoFi Stadium and [watch] them play a casual match.

My favorite sport to watch would be football. I got into it because my dad’s a football coach, and I had an uncle who played college football, so it’s kind of natural through the family. I like the camaraderie of a team, the locker room, and of course, the game is really fun. Playing it in high school, the Friday Night Lights are really something that’s second to none. I was able to kick a winning field goal and score a bunch of points to win a CIF championship when I was a senior in high school as the quarterback. That was a very memorable moment to be able to do that.
