Senior Class Council hosted the first Northwood Homecoming Tailgate on Oct. 17.
The event, held in the Irvine High School parking lot, aimed to encourage school spirit among students by offering accessories, poster-making stations and free food for the student section. Around 100 students from all grade levels attended the event and played games such as spikeball and ping-pong.
“[The purpose was] to make memories and highlight the Homecoming game because this is our last Homecoming game, so we should celebrate it together,” senior class president George Liu said. “I thought that was super meaningful because everybody had fun, no matter what social group they were a part of.”
Paid for by SCC’s previous fundraisers and ticket sales, the event was part of their initiative to introduce unique events that make senior year memorable for all students.
“I looked around and saw that each of the activities was being used. There [were] people at the spikeball table—the drinks and food were being used,” Liu said. “There was no activity that [was] left out, and that means that no person was left out.”
Student attendees positively expressed their feelings of togetherness and bonding toward the event, according to senior Reina Almaoui.
“My favorite part was seeing all the seniors in one area because when we’re at school, we’re separated, so it was nice to see everyone together and having fun, playing games and eating food together,” Almaoui said.
SCC is preparing for future events like senior barbecue and breakfast in May, and hopes to make Homecoming Tailgate an annual event.
“This was our first event, so it’s just a glimpse of the many things yet to come,” SCC member Nathan Tuason said. “Keep a lookout for our next events—this is just the beginning of what SCC has planned.”
