Spiderman’s “coming home” to Disney

After the shocking split between Sony and Marvel that would have prevented Spider-Man from appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the two companies announced on Sept. 27 that Marvel will be producing another Spider-Man film with Sony.

After Disney and Sony failed to reach an agreement on how the profits of future Spider-Man films would be shared, the two companies initially pulled away from the negotiating table. Less than a month after, the companies have agreed to a new deal that will have Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige lead the creative production of the movie starring Tom Holland as Spider-Man. Feige, who has been the president of Marvel Studios since 2007 and the primary figure responsible for the success with the Avengers films, voiced his relief for being able to help produce future Spider-Man films.

“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” Feige said in an interview with Variety. “He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”

The August standoff began when Disney demanded that Sony split the profits of future Spider-Man movies equally, despite Disney already owning rights for Spider-Man merchandise. Sony refused, wanting to keep the current deal where Disney receives 5 percent of the profits. With their current deal, Marvel will capitalize on merchandise and keep creative control over their hero, while also shouldering 25 percent of the costs and reaping 25 percent of the profits.

“I think Spider-Man coming back to the MCU is amazing,” sophomore Satvik Sharma said. “Now we have another movie to really look forward to.”

Disney and Sony’s partnership has been nothing short of extraordinary, with “Spider-Man: Far from Home” becoming the highest grossing Sony film of all time. Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr., made an appearance in their 2017 film “Spider-Man: Homecoming” while Spider-Man played significant roles in both “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.” There is no doubt that Spider-Man will continue to play a large role in future Avengers films after being entrusted Tony Stark’s special glasses during a key moment in “Spider-Man: Far from Home.”

“I think it’s great that they are finishing the Spider-Man trilogy,” senior Ethan Sloate said. “I hope they will be able to maintain the quality of ‘Spider-Man: Far from Home’ in the upcoming film.”
