For any athlete competing in one of Northwood’s athletic programs, a familiar tradition occurs every June: the “Dead Period.”
This year, Northwood Athletics will run the Dead Period from June 7-20, enforcing a mandatory no-contact rule per CIF regulations.
The two-week period explicitly forbids contact and any coordinated workouts between coaches and student athletes. In 2018, this requirement was reduced from three weeks to two for football, and as of the 2023-24 season, the two-week requirement applies to all sports within the Southern Section.
“The CIF Dead Period is intended to give families, athletes, coaches and administrative staff the same time off from outside athletics at a school site,” track head coach Louie Muniz said. “The idea is to ensure all stakeholders get a break from our hectic athletic schedules.”
With many sports summer camps expected to begin as soon as June 23, Northwood Athletics recommends these two weeks as a great time for students to plan vacations.
