Northwood’s first ever Movie night, planned by the Sophomore Class Council, was held on March 22 at the upper grass field, featuring a showing of “Spiderman: No Way Home” and concessions hosted by campus clubs.
The event was free entry and open to all grade levels. Students brought blankets and lawn chairs to keep themselves warm and comfortable while watching.
“My favorite part about movie night was that it was outside,” freshman Lizzy Li said. “It’s one thing to watch a movie in the theater but watching it outside is such a different experience. I felt it was a wind down from this long school week and an opportunity to chill with my friends and take a break.”
Snacks were available for purchase at the event through a ticket system. Clubs such as Thrive, E-Commerce, Competitive Business Research, Arts Society, CSF and Sports Analytics served a variety of food including Raising Canes and Spiderman-themed desserts. Sophomore Class Council ran a cotton candy machine and also served additional snacks like Airheads and nachos.
“I thought that the fact that the concessions were run by clubs was really cool,” sophomore Megan Levering said. “It was fun to see them promote their club and sell items they chose.”
Sophomore Class Council decided to pivot from the Spring Fling dance, which they are typically in charge of planning, to the free movie night in an effort to diversify school events on campus and steer away from the expensive costs of a dance.
“Our student body is used to our larger school events primarily being dances that cost around $60-100,” class vice president sophomore Rose Chhabria said. “Our focus was to make the movie night a more accessible event where students don’t have to worry about buying tickets or expensive clothes to come.”
Sophomore Class Council hopes to use feedback on the event to hopefully continue movie night in future years as a Northwood tradition.
“Everybody who was outside clapped and yelled at certain parts of the movie which made everything even more enjoyable,” junior Daijelle Morris said. “It was just a really nice vibe and events like these make me want to have more school spirit.”
