Sophomore Class Council organized Movie Night, which played “Black Panther” and featured a variety of snacks sold by Northwood clubs on April 12.
Since the first Movie Night last year, Sophomore Class Council wanted to bring more student voice into the decisions made for the event. Student forum members provided movie ideas through a Google Form, which were finalized during a poll of the entire student body and after additional feedback from a sophomore student rep meeting.
“Movie night is one of the few social events that Northwood hosts for free entry,” sophomore class president Annika Navarro said. “We wanted to advocate for students who don’t necessarily have the best interest for the other events that we highlight, like school dances or athletic games and create a space where students could rewind, socialize and eat good food.”
Although entry was free, students could purchase tickets in exchange for concessions. Clubs sold snacks of their choice, including Wingstop from the California Scholarship Federation club, instant ramen from SOCC, Canes from Key Club, matcha brownies from Seeds Club and more.
“I loved that clubs got together to sell their snacks rather than the school just handing out popcorn,” senior Katie Damko said. “The matcha brownies especially were a really unique snack.”
As a relatively new event and replacement for the spring dance, SOCC hopes that the tradition of movie night is more accessible and relaxed compared to dances.
“Going into movie night, I just wanted people to truly enjoy it,” Navarro said. “My main goal was to create a space for people to just unwind and have a good time with their friends.”
