Irvine Unified School District and Irvine Valley College are launching a hybrid dual enrollment program for incoming ninth graders beginning in the 2025-26 school year.
Enrolled students will commit to four years of dual enrollment, taking two IVC classes each semester that count toward finishing CalGETC requirements—general education graduation requirements for UC and CSU schools—while receiving high school elective credit.
“The program gives access to college courses while in high school, with additional guidance and support,” Irvine Virtual Academy counselor Sam Lane said. “Students are more likely to graduate high school, attend and graduate college.”
By the time enrolled students graduate, they will have completed California diploma requirements and CalGETC units. Students who complete additional units may be able to earn an associate’s degree.
Since program courses may not satisfy general education requirements for schools outside the California College systems, students with goals of attending a UC or CSU are encouraged to apply. The courses will count toward the eight classes students are allowed, so this may limit other opportunities.
“We’re looking for students with a great balance of time management, study skills and motivation,” IUSD counselor Kevin O’Connell said.
Program classes are virtual or asynchronous, and span Monday to Thursday morning with in-person assessments at San Joaquin HS. For more information, visit ivasecondary.iusd.org/early-college-program.
