Valentine’s Day means witnessing every couple fall even more madly in love. But what if you’re suffering from a broken heart? Whether in real life or fiction, not everyone gets together, but that doesn’t change the fact that some couples (including you and your crush) might have been endgame. You might be spending Valentine’s Day alone, but these five couples are definitely sharing your heartbreak.
María Vasquez and Tony Wyzek, “West Side Story”
María, a Puerto Rican immigrant, and Tony, a member of a rival gang, possessed a truly pure love that transcended the deep racial prejudice and gang violence of the 1950s. Despite the violence and disapproval surrounding their relationship, María and Tony fought for their love, even choosing to face their own trauma for each other. In an equal, united society, the two could have lived out their own perfect love story, but due to conflict between the gangs, Tony died in María’s arms, just as they were planning to run away together.
Agatha Pendragon and Sophie of Gavaldon, “The School for Good and Evil”
Agatha and Sophie were each other’s best friends, finding comfort in each other’s oddities. Proving that villains and heroes can fall in love with each other, the two transcend the stereotypical cliché of a princess falling for a prince. After sharing true love’s kiss, the complexity of their relationship redefines the fact that all epic love stories have to end in triumph. Their bond, rooted in friendship and love, was torn apart, not by good or evil, but by fate and duty. As Queen of Camelot and Dean of Evil, they were forced to part, though in another world, they might have lived happily ever after.
Gwen Stacy and Peter Parker, “The Amazing Spider-Man”
These two were undoubtedly the best superhero couple: Peter Parker, the quirky outcast living a double-life, and Gwen Stacy, the daughter of the police captain trying to hunt him down. With their shared interest in science, Gwen brought out Peter’s intellectual side and was one of the few genuine relationships that Peter had before her death. It wasn’t the hero and helpless damsel in distress with these two. Unlike his other love interests, Gwen loved him for who he really was as Peter Parker, not just as a superhero.
Fred Weasley and Angelina Johnson, “Harry Potter”
Bonding over their love for Quidditch, Fred and Angelina were fellow Gryffindors that played on the same team for seven years at Hogwarts. Their opposing personalities would have made an impeccable duo and brought a new angle to the characters, with Fred becoming more than just comedic relief and Angelina being more than just the team captain responsible for everyone. In the few scenes they had together, Fred and Angelina showcased the true peace that a stable relationship can bring. Fred unfortunately died during the Battle of Hogwarts, but was honored by Angelina who named her son after him.
Fitz Vacker and Sophie Foster, “The Keeper of Lost Cities”
Fitz and Sophie could have been the ultimate friends-to-lovers couple. The loyalty they displayed for each other was incredible, standing by each other when they were alone or facing a dangerous quest. And at the end of that quest, Fitz and Sophie always made their way back to each other. Although Sophie is currently dating Keefe, there is still hope that they will reunite in the final book of the series releasing on Nov. 4.
