Giant pink posters and pink ribbon stickers at local stores—-although simple, these mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Pink October movement, a time to advocate for breast cancer research and to uplift over four million patients and survivors nationwide.
Breast cancer accounts for over 30% of all new female cancer patients annually, according to the American Cancer Society. Since its beginnings in 1985, Breast Cancer Awareness Month has grown to include social media campaigns, walkathons, fundraisers, sporting events and more. For students looking to get involved with breast cancer awareness events, here are a few options:
Pink-Out games at Northwood
Northwood’s Girls Volleyball program recently hosted a Pink-Out game on Oct. 15, encouraging students to join the Pink October movement by showing up in all pink, decorating the gym with pink posters and cancer ribbons to support breast cancer survivors. Girls Flag Football also hosted a Pink-Out game on Oct. 16 to show their support. Upcoming Pink-Out games include the football game on Oct. 25, where students can wear pink to support Northwood and the cancer community.
Walkathons in Irvine
Upcoming walkathons include the Paint the Town Pink – Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on Oct. 27, hosted by The Abigail Barraza Foundation.
