Northwood students celebrated Timby’s 25th birthday with a Disney spirit day and surprise ice cream for ASB cardholders on Sept. 9.
ASB decorated the campus with balloons, posters and chalk drawings in honor of Northwood’s mascot. During lunch, students played with fidgets, slime and toys found in birthday goodie bags. ASB cardholders were also greeted by Timby as they lined up to get ice cream sandwiches at the Student Activities Center after sixth period.
“I didn’t know that Timby had a birthday until I saw all the posters but I liked that we were celebrating it,” senior William Ryee said. “I also liked the ice cream that ASB was giving out because it was refreshing during the heatwave.”
The idea was brought up by ASB advisor Jennifer Petrosian and planned by ASB vice president senior Katherine Jiang and club commissioner junior Emily Yokota. ASB chose a broad theme for the spirit day with the goal of uniting the student body and increasing participation. Students wore Disney movie shirts, keychains, Mickey Mouse ears and more.
“People could wear what they’re comfortable in,” Yokota said. “They could go full head to toe in Disney gear, or they could just wear a simple shirt or a pin. Making our themes a little more vague helps so that everybody feels like they can participate without being uncomfortable.”
Although this was the first birthday event held for Timby, marking his silver jubilee, ASB hopes to make this an annual tradition.
“Timby gets crowds riled up for rallies and football games and is quite literally the face of Northwood,” Yokota said. “I think we owe it to him to celebrate after him representing and doing all of this for us for 25 years. I hope we continue to celebrate his birthday because he deserves it.”
