Northwood’s annual Jazz at the Oak event
Northwood students and parents enjoyed Jazz at the Oak, the music department’s annual fundraiser, on May 13. The outdoor event consisted of performances from Northwood’s jazz groups, a raffle and a variety of food trucks for attendees to enjoy.
“It was really cool to be able to sit back, chat, enjoy the music and attempt to win a renowned ‘Ben-pen’,” said senior Ashley Chung, a bass player in Jazz II.
Director Ben Case’s handmade “Ben-pens,” were among the many prizes offered in the raffle, along with Prom tickets, parking permits and the opportunity to perform with the jazz bands. The money raised will go to Northwood’s music program.
During the event, Northwood’s various jazz bands and combo groups, along with Sierra Vista’s own Jazz Band, performed songs such as “Pink Panther”, “Uptown Funk” and “Feelin’ Good” to set a relaxed, cheerful atmosphere.
“Jazz band is about creativity and feeling comfortable with making mistakes,” Chung said. “Of course we play wrong notes, but we can still laugh and be proud of our performances.”
