Northwood named OC Student Section of the Week
Northwood’s student section, the Den, erupted in cheer during Pack the Gym Night on Jan. 21 once the basketball team scored its 10th point against the Beckman Patriots, successfully earning a spot in the Orange County (OC) Sidelines as the Student Section of the Week.
OC Sidelines is a high school sports blog, and it justified its selection with the enthusiasm of all the students who followed the blackout theme and cheered the basketball team to its 70-58 victory. Students, including sophomore Meghan Mansonhing, were passionate about the game’s theme as well as the plan to stay completely silent until Northwood scored its 10th point.
“I think the blackout theme was cool because it was really easy for everyone to follow,” Mansonhing said. “The 10-point silence was effective because everyone was dark and came alive after the 10th point was scored.”
To support the blackout theme, the Associated Student Body (ASB) also handed out black headbands to the students. Additionally, senior class president Kiwon Yun, along with spirit and rally commissioner senior Peter Ko took on a transformation with the silent theme as they switched from golf commentators to ESPN announcers.
“Having a student section like the Den is an important part of student life here at Northwood,” Yun said. “It not only gets the players pumped but also celebrates the idea of having pride for one’s school.”
All the members of ASB, including Girls Athletics Commissioner senior Danielle Solaru, expressed pride and joy for Northwood’s recognition of school spirit.
“I feel so much pride for the spirit of our Northwood students and our amazing athletic programs,” Solaru said. “It’s so awesome to see each and every student bring their own voice to the crowd. And being recognized just goes to show that the incredible spirit of our student section is something to be proud of.”
Such crowd contributions to the games have paved the way for the team’s 10-0 finish in the Pacific Coast League (PCL) and its second round playoff run. Boys Varsity Basketball team member senior William Kim credited part of the team’s victory over Beckman High School to the student section.
“Everything from the chants to support us to noises the fans make to distract the other team is crucial to winning every game,” Kim said.
