Following the freshman election on Sept. 4, the Class of 2022 has elected freshmen Shan Syed and Katie Peabody as their class president and vice president, respectively.
The freshman TAs voted between five candidates for president and five for the vice president during tutorial in the gym, where ASB hosted campaign speeches for the freshmen. After each candidate explained how they would serve their roles, ASB collected the ballots to tally out the winners of the election.
“Before I stood up, I was really nervous because there were a lot of people,” Syed said. “When I went up and people started to cheer, I felt comfortable because I felt like I belonged. In fact, I was very doubtful about even signing up because I didn’t think I would be elected.”
The two newly elected leaders will plan the school talent show and the Sip ‘n’ Study, an event in which students and teachers can sit down to destress around finals week. The pair will be in charge of designing the events, as well as ensuring that they run smoothly. They will also work with freshman class council to choreograph their class dance for the first homecoming pep rally.
“I definitely want to bring more excitement and spirit for everyone,” Peabody said. “I plan to add more decorations to our section of pep rallies as well as make an unforgettable dance routine.”
In the meantime, both Syed and Peabody are hoping to make their peers feel more comfortable. As new students to both ASB and Northwood, they promise to make sure the freshmen feel welcome and safe each and every day.
“Even though we may be the smallest, we’ve got the biggest hearts,” Syed said of his fellow freshmen. “We are a part of the pack now and we will howl!”
