Girls track captures third league win
After an exciting season, Northwood’s Girls Track and Field team chalked up another championship title with a record of 5-0 in the Pacific Coast League (PCL), making them league champions for the third year in the row.
Under the leadership of coaches Louie Muniz, Tony Muniz, Chris Sharpe, Dorian Johnson, Mike Stewart, George Varvas, Herb Stockman, Dean Toohey and Sal Alvarez, the team has been training hard since late-February.
Leading up to the final event were hundreds of hours of practice and training in activities such as bench presses, speed work and running over hills.
“Each athlete has their own things to focus on, but for me, I focused a lot on refining each individual aspect of a throw,” junior Shannen Lam said.
This training was amplified in the week preceding league finals, as athletes began training with extreme precision in their respective events.
“We focused on technique, like block starts, long jump runways or sprint form,” junior Kellie May said. “At that point in the season, you are already conditioned and you have to trust your training.”
Motivated by their success in the past two years and by a strong start to the season, athletes had made it their goal to achieve another league title.
“League has been really awesome,” senior Ashely Larson said. “I’m so proud of my team members. It’s crazy to think we’ve been able to be league champs three years in a row.”
However, this was also a bittersweet moment for some seniors, who would be competing with their fellow team members for the last time. Nevertheless, the future looks bright.
“The seniors are a huge part of our program and have led us to great victories this season. It’s super sad to see them leave, but they’ve acted as great mentors throughout the season and there are people who are ready to step up to the plate and pick up where they left off,” Lam said.
The team’s brilliant performance in the league allowed many athletes to qualify for the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs. Athletes Chinyere Chambers, Carina Hendley, Amanda Bolger, Larson, Sami Murphy, Erika Adler, Brooke Kong, Kellie May, Haley Fry, Kaylee Nguyen, Alexis Gopaul, Hurya Ahmed and Jasmine Esparza went on to partake in the CIF playoffs.
As the current season winds down, Northwood’s Track and Field team hopes to continue its success as it pursues a 4th league title next year.
