A huge Howler hello to the new school year
Summer is over, and the school year has just begun. Most newcomers were officially welcomed to campus yesterday at the link crew orientation. To welcome everyone on campus, here’s a list of reminders for the upcoming school year.
Schedules and classes can still be changed or dropped on the first day of school if they were not changed during registration. Students can visit their respective counselors to receive more information on this.
In addition to changing classes, students can also expect to attend numerous events during the first week of the 2016-17 school year.
The first pep rally of the year is tomorrow. This rally will be led by the 2016-17 spirit rally commissioners, seniors Marcus Redman and Matthew Liu. It will feature performances by the NHS marching band and pep squad, the traditional role call and the presentation of the 2016 Football team.
The first NHS Varsity football game will be a home game held tomorrow as well at Portola High School against Saddleback Valley Christian High School. This game will feature a Marching Band performance of a Beatles-themed show.
The back to school dance will be on Friday. ASB chose the theme Neon Lights for this year’s dance. Tickets can be purchased at the Student Activities Center throughout this week, and prices will be raised each day. Dances and school activities planned on school campus are directed by ASB president Kevin Zhou and resident advisor Zeff Dena.
A practice SAT will be available for sophomores and juniors to try if interested in taking the SAT on Oct. 1 or in the spring. The practice SAT features a full length test with a mandatory essay portion. Freshmen are also eligible to take this exam if they are taking Honors Humanities core classes or Geometry and higher this fall.
The actual fall SAT can be taken on Oct. 1. The PSAT also known as the NMSQT can be taken by incoming sophomores and juniors on Oct. 22. Scores on this test can be sent for junior students looking to qualify for a National Merit Scholarship. The ACT can also be taken on Oct. 22, with registration opening on Sept. 16. Earlier dates are available to take this exam as well — interested students can even take the test as early as September.
